Prasat Muang Sing: Thailand’s Angkor Wat

Prasat Muang Sing is unlike any other ancient Thai temples in the cities of Ayutthaya, Sukhothai and Chiang Saen. Prasat Muang Sing is an ancient Khmer style temple, with more similarity to Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

Even if you think you have already visited plenty of temples in Thailand, I still highly recommend visiting the Prasat Muang Sing Historical Park.

The temples at Prasat Muang Sing were originally built somewhere between the 12th and 13th century. For centuries these temples lay hidden in thick jungle overgrowth and were only uncovered about 50 years ago.

Surprisingly, not many people know about these temples in Saiyok. It is still a relatively hidden and off the beaten track destination to visit in Thailand.

Exploring the grounds of Prasat Muang Sing is quiet and relaxing. Unlike the crowds at Ayutthaya’s temples or Bangkok’s temples, there are only a handful of Thai tourists here. There are no buses of day trip tourists coming from Bangkok.

There are 4 monuments at the site of Prasat Muang Sing including:

  1. main building complex including walls, gates and the radiating Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara statue
  2. smaller building complex which has mostly been destroyed over time
  3. ruins of another 2 smaller ancient buildings

Also on the grounds, but not part of the temple is a set of prehistoric burial sites. The burial sites are thousands of years old and prove very early human existence in the area. These early settlements would date back to a time even before the Thai kingdoms.

It is best to allow at least two hours to properly everything available at the Prasat Muang Sing Historical Park. There are plenty of information boards around which explain the history behind the temple. I suggest taking your time and reading these as you walk around for a better understanding of the place.

How to get to Prasat Muang Sing

Prasat Muang Sing is located in the Saiyok district of Kanchanaburi Province in Thailand. It is about a 50km drive from the city of Kanchanaburi. There remote parts of Kanchanaburi can only be reached via private transport (i.e. driving your own car or motorbike) or by hiring a songtaew.

The songtaew option is likely to cost in the range of 1,000THB (USD 40) for a full day. Therefore it is advisable to collect a small group of people to split the bill if you are on a budget and to consider adding in a few more attractions in the Saiyok district to make the day more worthwhile.

Hotels near Prasat Muang Sing

Saiyok is a great place to spend the weekend. It is one of my favorite places to visit nearby Bangkok. There are nice boutique hotels and resorts around the area, where you can spend a night out surrounded by the jungle.

Only a 10-minute drive from Prasat Muang Sing there are a few raft houses available which are right on the water of the River Kwai Noi. My personal favorite is the Tanyan Resort and Spa offering a comfortable double bed raft house from just 1,200THB per night.
